The town first acquired a post office in 1879 and opened a subscription school. It was the first school in Concho County and was eventually petitioned to form a school district in 1886. In the mid-1880s, the town’s population was approximately 100. In the following decades, it became an important pecan, sheep and wool shipping center. In 1881, the town organized two churches, one Presbyterian and one Baptist.
